RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond Police are investigating a suspicious death, according to sources. Officers were called to the 4700 block of Caldwell Avenue not far from the Chesterfield County line around noon Thursday.

There are still a lot of questions right now including who the person is found dead inside the home and what exactly happened to him. Sources say that information will only be uncovered through a medical examiner's autopsy.

About a dozen detectives rushed to the scene, where we're told a white man believed to be in his 40s is found dead.

A smell permeated the air and stretched past the home where the body was found. Forensics investigators entered the home in hazmat suits through a window. They also obtained a search warrant for the house.

Neighbors came out of their homes on what is usually a quiet street near Jefferson Davis Highway. A couple houses down a group of women who were visibly distraught waited to hear from police.

They tell NBC12 they believe the person found might be their relative who went missing earlier this month. Their thoughts immediately turn to the worst.

"I'm going crazy," Courtney Phillips exclaimed. "My brother's dead."

Phillips says her brother has been missing since the 18th of August. They've filed a missing person's report and tell us they see his truck behind the home where the body was found.

"He was alright," Phillips lamented. "Sometimes he'd get cocky but he had a good heart. He was a good person. He's got a daughter."

Phillips says her brother has been to the home where the body was found in the past. She and other loved ones anxiously awaited more information as detectives canvassed the area, speaking with witnesses and gathering evidence in the case.

In the past, cases that have been called "suspicious deaths" have turned out to be anything from drug overdoses to homicides. Again, at this point, we don't know what exactly happened to this person.

Police ask anyone with any information about this crime to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
