Vancouver family survives pit bull attack

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -  A Vancouver family is facing thousands of dollars in medical bills, after two pit bulls injured the family dog and bit a man and his 13-year-old daughter.

James Lewis said he let his two small dogs outside Friday night to do their business, when he suddenly heard the sound of dogs fighting.  When he walked outside, he saw a two pit bulls near his yard, one of which was shaking his dachshund, Dave.  Lewis eventually separated the dogs, and was bitten on the hand.

As the family tried to rush Dave to the animal hospital, Lewis' wife, Wynter, said the dogs came after Dave again, while her 13-year-old daughter, Alexys, carried him to the car.  Lewis said Alexys suffered bruises to her face, and what looks like a puncture wound to her lower lip.

The two pit bulls were taken into custody by Clark County Animal Control officers, who confirmed both were off-leash at the time.

The pit bull suspected of biting Dave and his owners will be placed in 10-day quarantine, to rule out rabies.

Lewis, meanwhile, is stuck with some unexpected medical bills.  Dave's surgery cost $2,000 by itself, Lewis said.  Family friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay those bills.  The site can be found at
