PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Community members are raising money to help pay for the funeral of a 10-year-old boy who died after being hit by a car on his way home from school.

Gresham police said the crash happened near the 900 block of Northeast Country Club Avenue on Friday afternoon.

Gresham fire officials said there was a two-vehicle collision, and that one of the cars involved careened onto the sidewalk and crashed into a fence, hitting two brothers.

Jaquis Thornton, 10, died at a hospital.

His 8-year-old brother, Jayden, was hospitalized.

Karen Harris and Rachel Rolph are raising money to pay for Jaquis' funeral.

“This mother has no funds, zero dollars to bury her son and it has to be done by Friday,” Rolph said.

Her daughter went to school with the brothers and played with them after school almost every day.

She calls Jaquis a phenomenal young man. She described the memories the boy's classmates shared with her.

“Every single person who shared a story was something along the lines of ‘I was outside playing at recess and nobody wanted to play with me and he came up and said 'hi, I'm Jaquis. Do you want to play?' 'I didn't have friends and people were bullying me and he said, I'll be your friend,''' Rolph said. “My daughter's example is she was new to the school and he said, ‘my name is Jaquis, my favorite colors are red and blue. What's yours?' And since then they've been great friends.”

You can donate to the Jayden and Jaquis Donation account at any Key Bank location.

A vigil is planned at Hall Elementary School on Friday at 6 p.m.

No citations or criminal charges have been issued at this time as the investigation continues.
