Police investigate reports of sex acts filmed at Grant High School

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Sex crimes detectives are investigating reports of sexual activity between students being filmed at Grant High School.

A school resource officer was alerted to the activities occurring on and off campus last week, according to Portland police, and immediately notified Grant High School administrators.

The Portland Police Bureau's Sex Crimes Unit was then contacted and an investigation was launched.

Because there are potentially underage students who were videotaped and the video may have been shared, police say this could be a child porn investigation involving felony charges.  They're also investigating whether the students involved knew they were being recorded.

“I'm actually very shocked, people should know not to do that kind of thing,” freshman Paje Wiklend said.

“I think this is not just Grant, I think this is probably a national problem,” Grant High parent Grey Byrd told Fox 12.

Most students Fox 12 spoke with Monday said they were not surprised to hear of the investigation.  While police have not said where on campus the videos were taken, students said it was in a bathroom or locker room.

Junior Karlos Perez said that while it may have been a prank, the people involved need to face consequences.

“It's high school and things happen,” Perez said.  “But it's surprising that something like this would actually go out and be so public and be shared so much.”

No arrests have been made at this point, but Portland police said there is no reason to believe the public is at risk in relation to this investigation.

A Portland Public Schools spokesperson released a statement on the investigation on Monday saying, "PPS takes student safety very seriously. As soon as the concerns were brought to our attention we immediately took action and are working with authorities."

Grant High Principal Carol Campbell sent an email to parents saying:

"You may see media reports of a police investigation regarding sexual activity on and off campus involving Grant High School Students. We take student safety very seriously, investigated promptly, and have been cooperating with the police. We are following the district's discipline policies and procedures.

Due to privacy laws, and out of respect for student and family confidentiality, we will not be sharing any other information about this incident.

In the last two newsletters, I have included links to online resources that address how parents can monitor teenagers use of social media and smart phones.  I encourage you to read the articles and have a conversation with your teen about school and legal consequences regarding the misuse of text messaging, Instagram, Facebook and other types of social media.

Our primary concern is the safety of Grant students.  If you or your student has specific concerns, please contact me."

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Detective Nathan Sheppard at 503-823-3886, nathan.sheppard@portlandoregon.gov.
