SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Secretary of State Kate Brown announced Monday the Independent Party of Oregon achieved major party status as of Feb. 2.

Oregon law requires a major political party have at least 5 percent of the number of registered voters in the most recent general election. Based off the 2014 general election, a major political party must have at least 108,739 registered members.

On Feb. 2 the Independent Party of Oregon surpassed the 5 percent requirement by just three voters. A party leader contacted the Secretary of State to get the party's status reevaluated.

The party's status will be reevaluated later this year, on Aug. 17, according to Oregon law.

The Independent Party is now the third major political party in Oregon, joining Oregon Republican's and Oregon Democrat's.
