PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

NBA All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge and the Portland Trail Blazers teamed up with local nonprofits and restaurants to collect and distribute food to families in need.

Aldridge was on hand Monday as families picked up the food at Cherry Park Elementary School.

The event was part of the Blazers' Alleviate Hunger program, in which local nonprofit Urban Gleaners collects unused food from Moda Center events and distributes it to food pantries, schools and free farmer's markets.

Levy Restaurants and Papa Murphy's also pitched in to donate food for the event.

Urban Gleaners' founder, Tracy Oseran, said she hopes having Aldridge volunteering will help bring more people to help their cause.

"He's going to help us with what we do every week, which is unload our van, lay out the food, greet the families, help the families take the food, and to hopefully shed some light on the project and the fact that we shouldn't be wasting this kind of food," Oseran said. "It is not a good thing, and there's so many people in need."

Aldridge said he knows eliminating hunger is a big issue and he's happy the Blazers are working to make a difference.
