PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) - An Oregon woman behind bars in Japan for possession of Adderall will soon be on her way back home, after she was released from jail.

Police took Carrie Russell into custody on Feb. 20 for possession of the attention-deficit disorder medication, which is illegal in Japan because it contains amphetamine.

Russell was in Japan planning to teach English. While there, her mother sent her a three-month refill of the prescription, leading to her arrest.

Sen. Ron Wyden released a statement Monday night saying in part, "I'm thrilled that common sense has won the day and that Carrie is being released to her family."

Russell's family also wrote a letter of apology, stating she never intended to break the law.

Russell will reportedly return to Portland in the next couple days.
