PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A group of residents in the Tabor Heights neighborhood of southeast Portland are trying to stop cell phone provider T-Mobile from putting a transmission tower in their neighborhood.

The group, called No Tabor Towers, took their concerns to the Portland City Council Wednesday.

Members say their concerns are two-fold: the effect the tower would have on property values in the historic neighborhood, and the possible health effects.

The group is worried radio signals from the tower could increase the risk of cancer for those who live nearby.

One neighbor, Shelly Lufkin, said she and her daughter have both survived cancer and she doesn't want to risk getting it again.

"I'm a cancer survivor, my daughter's a cancer survivor, so it really hits you close to home," Lufkin said. "And who knows how it could affect our health, and we've got 40 kids in the neighborhood."

The Federal Communication Commission and the American Cancer Society say radiation from cell phone towers is far below allowed amounts at ground level and the towers have not been shown to have any negative health effects.
