HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

Hillsboro is now home to North America's largest multi-family affordable living facility specially designed to save energy.

REACH Community Development, an organization that works to provide affordable housing, and Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) celebrated Orchards at Orenco's grand opening Thursday.

The 57-unit development located at the Orenco Station in Hillsboro is built to Passive House energy standards. Building officials said this means tenants can reduce energy consumption by nearly 90 percent when compared to other facilities.

The complex has triple-paned windows, a heat recovery system, and extra insulation for the winter months.

Residents can expect relatively low rents, ranging from $611-$733 per month.

"Stable, quality housing makes a big difference in the lives of low-income residents trying to get ahead," Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici said. "The Orchards at Orenco will strengthen the community, reduce our environmental footprint, and lower residents' utility bills."

The project was financed with help from Wells Fargo, the Community Housing Fund, Meyer Memorial Trust, Network for Oregon Affordable Housing (NOAH), Oregon Housing and Community Services, NeighborWorks(R) America, and the Washington County Office of Community Development.
