Man threatens to pepper spray employee, runs with cash

Posted: Updated:

A man snuck right past a worker at a pizza joint, threatened her with pepper spray, then took off with cash and it was all caught on camera.

The robbery happened around 5 p.m. Friday at Lone Elder Pizza in Canby. Sharie Hardy was the only employee working at the time.

"He goes 'I don't want to hurt you, stand back,' so he grabbed the money and just ran out," she described.

Hardy has worked at the Lone Elder for over a year, but she said that night at the pizza joint no longer felt like home.

Hardy noted it was supposed to be one their busiest hours, but no one was buying or picking up pizza when the robbery happened.

She said the man came over right behind her to grab the money out of the safe. Surveillance video shows him kneeling down then grabbing the cash.

"He had pepper spray right up to my face so I said 'Whoa,' and backed up," Hardy recalled.

The video then shows the suspect walking out the same way he walked in.

Hardy called police right away but even though the suspect was gone, she said the fear stuck around.

"Yeah I'm calm, but my knees were knocking like it was just trembling," she said.

Lone Elder Pizza has been in Julie Chapmanmoore's family for over 40 years, and during that time she said the restaurant has never seen this kind of crime.

"[We've] never had anything like this happen before, so it's disturbing," she said. "But no one was hurt so we're really glad."

Chapmanmoore wants police to catch the man who not only stole cash from her restaurant, but the "safe" feeling her employee once had.

Chapmanmoore added she's making changes so employees would not be alone in the future.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 20's. Police said he was wearing a mask, blue sweatshirt, jeans with holes and blue gloves.
