VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A man accused of trying to kidnap a young girl at a Walmart store in Vancouver was arrested in southeast Portland and booked in the Multnomah County Jail, according to police.

Vancouver police put out an alert at 5 p.m. Saturday with surveillance images and a description of the suspect.

Investigators said the man contacted a young girl in the store on the 200 block of Northeast 10th Avenue and attempted to walk out with her.

The man was not known to the girl or her parents.

The suspect ended up fleeing the store and was not immediately caught. Police said the girl was not physically hurt and was safe with her family.

At 12:50 a.m. Sunday, Vancouver police reported that the suspect in this case had been arrested. He was identified as 45-year-old Steven Hayes. Hayes was booked in jail early Sunday morning on a fugitive hold without bail, according to the Multnomah County Jail website.

No information was immediately released by police about what led to his arrest or where he was caught in southeast Portland.
