Vintage “Base Ball” returned to Vancouver over the weekend when the Sherman Base Ball Club, featuring soldiers from the Army's Fort Vancouver, took on the Occidental Base Ball club of Vancouver.
The two teams followed the same rules they used in 1867, the Vancouver Community Concert Band played between innings and the play-by-play was aired over the PA system.
The event was organized by the staff at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site to show the impact that the Army had on growing the game into America’s national pastime.
The park offers online resources to learn more about the early history of base ball in the Pacific Northwest at USA.gov.
