PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A southwest Portland cyclist has been reunited with his stolen custom racing bike.

Stephen McLoughry reported his roughly $4,000 bike stolen last Tuesday, from the lockers at the Alpenrose Velodrome, where he races.  Two other custom bikes belonging to members of his racing team were also reported stolen.

Monday afternoon, McLoughry said he got a message from a member of his racing team, informing him his bike had been recovered by police.

“I was surprised, I was a little confused, because I didn’t expect I’d ever see it again,” said McLoughry, who had to borrow a friend’s bike to compete in a race over the weekend.

The stolen bike was spotted by a fellow racer, who also happens to work at a SW Portland bike shop the suspected thief visited on Monday.

“I get a look at the bike and I notice it’s a really expensive track bike made specifically for track racing at the Velodrome,” said Nathan Gibson, who works at Southwest Bicycle. “I look at the kid, see his shirt is unbuttoned, he’s dressed kind of scrubby, and I think, wait a minute, something’s not right here.”

Gibson said he grabbed the bike and struggled with the man holding it until police arrived.

McLoughry said he was happy to see his bike again, but hopes his teammates' bikes can still be recovered as well.
