Horse owner claims her mare was attacked by cougar near Hubbard

Posted: Updated:

A local woman whose horse was attacked wants to warn people that a cougar may be on the loose near Hubbard.

Halle Vanderhoof’s 16-year-old mare named Maggie was doing better Friday, but Thursday, her owner got a call that the horse had been attacked.

Vanderhoof was boarding Maggie at her friend's property in Hubbard. And early Thursday morning her friend noticed a huge, bloody gash on Maggie’s face.

Vanderhoof said the teeth marks look like those of a cougar.

She thinks the horse had a colt nearby and the mare may have been trying to protect it.

Vanderhoof has owned horses for years, but said this attack is a first.

"I’ve worried about it before, but of all the places we've been, this is the safest place that we thought she had been," she said. "And it's pretty shocking.  I've seen it happen before, but it's scary."

Vanderhoof contacted the department of fish and wildlife, which is planning to come out and look at Maggie’s injuries to better assess the situation.
