CLARK COUNTY, WA (KPTV) -

Clark County public health officials sent out an advisory Friday warning the public to avoid contact with water from Vancouver Lake because of positive test readings for blue-green algae.

The algae produce toxins that can be harmful to people, and even deadly for small pets if they ingest the water.

Officials are recommending the following actions around the lake:

  • No swimming or wading
  • No wind surfing or sail boarding
  • No water contact for animals
  • Precautions against contact with water while boating or fishing

Officials cited an increased importance to watch out for children.

"It's especially important to keep children out of the lake because they are more likely than adults to swallow water," Dr. Alan Melnick, Clark County Health Officer. said.

Officials said the algae bloom won't impact the Dragon Boat Championships scheduled for this weekend. They also noted eating fish from the lake is safe, if their kidneys and livers are removed.
