Coalition aimed to make streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists gather for memorial

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A coalition aimed to make streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists gathered at the corner of Southeast Foster and Holgate in Portland, Friday afternoon to remember those who were killed on roads this month.

Police said it was a motorcycle or three-wheeler that hit Marlene Popps on July 4, 2015, before she died from her injuries last week.

The driver who killed Popps is still at large.

Now this group, including Kristi Finney, wants to see change on Portland streets. Finney is a mother who said her son was killed in 2011 by a drunk driver.

"Most people don't even realize what they're doing, they don't realize that little habit of not stopping at the stop sign could lead to a pedestrian or all kinds of different things," she said at the gathering.

The group wanted lower speed limits in place to help reduce the number of deaths.
