Portland restaurants taking different steps to beat heatwave

Scorching triple digit temps hit Portland for the second day in a row Friday, but even with the heat people still have to eat.

“[There’s] no AC at home, so coming out to eat is nice even if it’s an outside deck because the winds not moving and heat's not so bad,” diner Erin Popelka said.

At Lardo off Hawthorne, they made sure to keep business booming rain or shine.

Not only were they serving AC inside, but outside customers got a special cool down with misters.

“We figured outside was the way to go and with this mister right here, it’s a nice place to be,” diner Scott Carey said.

On the other side of town, Andy Razatos, business owner of La Panza, said business is a different story.

“We had a family come in yesterday and before they even walked, into the door, they asked if there was AC, when they found out there wasn't, they turned around and left,” he said.

He said his restaurant faces a 30 percent decrease during the heatwave, so he leaves it up to the fans and rearranging his restaurant to keep customers cool.

“Putting our tables outside and trying to allow people to have a little bit cooler experience,” Razatos explained.

But even behind the scenes inside his kitchen, the heat makes a wider presence.

“It can be uncomfortable but you just push through it,” Razatos said. “The heat that’s hitting us now in Portland is pretty extreme, really warm.”

While Portland is expected to see a gradual cool down in the days ahead, Razatos said cooks just tough it out.

“If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.”
