SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A Salem veteran wounded in combat now has a new place to call home.

Sgt. Brian Lesh was recognized as a Project Rebuild True Hero by the Military Warriors Support Foundation at the Oregon Jamboree event Friday.

He received the keys to his newly renovated, mortgage-free home in Salem.

Lesh said this home will mean so much to him and his family.

"I can actually get the treatment I need because we won't have that stress anymore," he said. "We can focus on getting our finances straight, but most of all we'll be able to focus on getting me better."

During his time in the Army, Lesh was awarded many medals for his bravery and service to the country including the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Iraq Campaign Medal.

Lesh grew up in Salem and joined the Army in 1994. He has served overseas in Germany and had several deployments to Iraq, where he sustained combat-related injuries.

Lesh married his high school sweetheart on Halloween of 2014 after reconnecting 20 years later. The couple enjoys spending time with their children and pets.

In the future, Lesh said he dreams of planting a garden, raising chickens and refurbishing furniture with the help of his wife. He and his wife are also passionate about volunteering with organizations that help veterans.

Project Rebuild is a partnership between the Military Warriors Support Foundation and the Dr Pepper Snapple Group to place wounded veterans in mortgage-free homes to aid in their transition back to civilian life.
