Fast-moving fire destroys Tualatin home

Posted: Updated:

Nearly 50 firefighters responded to a Tualatin home Monday morning to fight a fire that may have started with a backyard barbecue.

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue said the residents of the home on Southwest Wilhelm Road called 9-1-1 around 12:30 a.m. to report the gas grill behind the house was on fire.

By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had spread and both stories of the home were fully involved. Firefighters said the residents were unable to shut off the grill's gas line, which facilitated the fire's spread.

Firefighters called in extra resources, including water tenders, to try to get the fire under control.

The fire caused significant damage to both stories of the home, and part of the structure collapsed as a result.

Both residents of the home and a dog were able to escape safely. There were no reports of injuries associated with the fire.

Firefighters planned to remain at the scene throughout the morning to put out hot spots and make sure the fire doesn't reignite.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
