SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

An 18-month-old child was seriously injured after falling out of a second-story window in Salem.

Emergency crews responded to an apartment complex at Village E. Way and State Street on Monday morning.

According to a Marion County Fire District #1 spokesperson, the child was climbing on a couch that was below the window and pushed out the screen, leading to the fall.

The child was taken to Salem Hospital and firefighters described it as a "significant trauma incident."

Firefighters urge families to take steps to prevent children from falling out of windows, including keeping windows closed and locked when not in use, keeping areas in front of windows clear of anything a child can climb and installing child safety window stops that can be by-passed by an adult in an emergency.
