Rep. Bonamici reviews Portland disaster preps

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

How prepared are Portland residents for a major earthquake? Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici was in town Monday meeting with emergency officials to find out the answer.

She toured the Portland Emergency Coordination Center with local leaders, hearing their concerns and learn more about emergency response plans.

A recent article in The New Yorker painted a grim picture for the region if, and when, a major earthquake hits, which Bonamici says is sparking new discussions in Washington.

The congresswoman said she is trying to focus on pre-disaster efforts like retrofitting buildings and bridges, getting recovery programs in place and earthquake alert systems.

She said the most important step that has been taken is education.

"We’re also talking about educating the community as well,” Bonamici said. “Making sure people know what they can do to retrofit their homes, or how they can remove their family from a building, where they can have their emergency supplies."

Bonamici just passed legislation through the U.S. House, and is hopeful it will pass through the Senate as well, that would improve tsunami warning systems, research and tsunami education.
