Phillips Creek Fire prompts evacuation notices in northeastern Oregon

Posted: Updated:

Several hundred firefighters are battling a wildfire that's threatening dozens of buildings near the town of Elgin in northeastern Oregon.

The Phillips Creek Fire started Saturday about 7 miles northwest of Elgin and as of Tuesday morning, had burned 1,100 acres.

Officials issued Level 1 evacuation notices to some residents as the wind pushed the fire closer to homes and other structures. Level 1 is the lowest level of evacuation notice, meaning residents should be ready to leave at a moment's notice.

The fire was two percent contained Tuesday.

Firefighters said hot, dry and windy conditions were helping the fire spread.

Officials said 10 crews, including two helicopters, were assigned to fight the fire.

The cause of the Phillips Creek Fire is under investigation.
