Families get an early start on back-to-school shopping

BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

Get those school supply lists ready. Store shelves are already filled with pencils, notebooks and everything else students need.

Some families are stocking up early.

“The first year I had tons of coupons, and then it was so much chaos that I gave up on the coupons because it slowed us down,” Beaverton mom Karen Gadowski said.

She has four school-aged children.

Gadowski said, over the years, she’s learned to shop early and to give herself and her kids plenty of time at the store.

“If you save it for the week before, the bins are empty,” she said. “We just jump in with our lists. I think last year it was two hours, so we just give ourselves a good chunk of time.”

The National Retail Federation says more families are doing the same, by shopping early to help spread out their budgets, avoid crowds and get popular supplies.

The organization estimates school shopping will cost parents around $97 a child.
