Brush fire leads to evacuation notice for town of Roosevelt, WA

ROOSEVELT, WA (KPTV) -

A mandatory evacuation notice was issued for the town of Roosevelt in Klickitat County due to a brush fire on Tuesday evening.

The fire was reported at around 1 p.m. near Wishram. By 4 p.m., it had grown to around 170 acres. 

The fire started along SR-14 near Sundale road, east of another brush fire that started near Wishram on Tuesday afternoon.

An initial Level 1 evacuation notice, meaning be ready to go, was upgraded to a Level 3 notice by Tuesday evening, alerting residents to evacuate immediately, according to the Klickitat County Emergency Management Office.

About 300 people have been evacuated.

Bickleton School was designated as the evacuation shelter for people forced to leave their homes. 

The Washington Department of Transportation shut down part of SR-14. The Highway is closed westbound at milepost 167, near Patterson with a detour available on HWY 22. HWY 14 is closed westbound from milepost 134.5 near Roosevelt to milepost 102 at the junction of US 97.

The fast-moving fire was being aided by winds upward of 25 mph.
