Portland man shot near location of National Night Out event

Posted: Updated:

A northeast Portland man is in the hospital with gunshot wounds after a shooting Monday night.

It happened near the corner of North Haight and Sumner.

Portland Police officers responded around 11 p.m. and found evidence of a shooting, but found no sign of a victim.

Then a short time later, other officers, who happened to be at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, saw 33-year-old Christopher Burgess pull up to the emergency room with gunshot wounds.

Officials say his car also had bullet holes in it.

FOX 12’s Jamie Wilson spoke to Burgess’ aunt at his home today and she was still very shaken.

She said Burgess was shot multiple times. He had surgery on Tuesday and it appeared he was going to recover.

Marnie Crenshaw and her family were jolted awake by the shooting.

“It was really loud, just pop, pop, pop!” said Crenshaw.  “It sounded like it was right outside my front door.”

Ironically, the shooting happened near the location of a National Night Out celebration taking place on Tuesday.

National Night Out is an annual event that encourages communities to come together and take a stand against violence.

Crenshaw said her neighborhood is full of families who look out for each other and they have a neighborhood watch program.

But she said more people need to speak up.

“If you see bad stuff going on, just tell people," she said.

This was the fourth shooting in Portland in less than a week, according to police.

Gang Enforcement officers are investigating and seeking tips from potential witnesses.
