PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland nonprofit that spays/neuters feral cats celebrated a milestone on Thursday: 75,000 cats have been spayed/neutered since 1995.

The Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon, which was founded in 1995, has helped reduce the euthanasia rate of cats in the Portland area by 87 percent over the past 8 years.

FCCO said the 75,000th cat is from Vancouver. The cat was brought in by caregivers Julie and Kevin, who said she showed up in their backyard looking scared and hungry, so they started leaving food out for her. They thought she was a boy cat until three small kittens came with her to dinner time.

The three kittens will also be spayed/neutered once they are big enough.

FCCO said Julie and Kevin have already found homes for the kittens, so they won't have to grow up fending for themselves.

Spay/neuter improves a cat's health and prevents future generations of feral cats.
