In this the 75th year of their fabulous home park of Louis Bloch Park in the heart of the city, the 13-year-old all-stars from Camas-Washougal are off to the east coast for the crown jewel of Babe Ruth Baseball.
"It's kind of like a dream, no one is expecting us to be here," said center fielder Evan Stott.
The sun has yet set on the endless summer for the 13-year-old all-star baseball team.
"It means so much, I would much rather be playing baseball than playing video games or anything else," said right fielder Michael Whitney.
State champs, check. Regional, check. It's the first ever squad of any age group from Camas-Washougal to make the Babe Ruth World Series,
"It's really special and it's a great opportunity for us to get ourselves out there and gets Camas on the map and Washougal and Washington," said first baseman Kolby Droaddent.
The boys and their love of the game are now off to Jamestown, NY, right outside of Buffalo, in hopes of returning to the northwest with one final priceless trophy.
"If we are down by seven runs we can still come back and win and we just keep on talking. We don't pull each other down, we just pull each other back up," said catcher Keegan Amberg.
When you talk about local teams heading to the Babe Ruth World Series, you have to include the perennial powers from Hazel Dell Metro.
For the 17th time since 1982, a club from HDM is off to the big show. The 14-year-old crew, a mix of middle schoolers, are on their way to Pine Bluff, AR, about 45 minutes from Little Rock, to play in the World Series for the age bracket.
Hazel Dell is used to being the home to champs, already four times over with the last coming in 2002.
"It's an honor because we get to play for our Pacific Northwest and represent Hazel Dell Metro," said Liam Kerr.
The boys even made a bet with their coaches to shave their heads if they won regionals. They were men of their word.
It's a pair of pricey trips for both Hazel Dell and Camas-Washougal. The two teams are doing fundraisers and have GoFundMe accounts set up at this link for Camas Washougal and this link for Hazel Dell.
