PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The 20th annual Providence Bridge Pedal featured a first in 2015: Cyclists riding across the brand new Tilikum Crossing bridge.

The annual event features bike routes from 14 to 37 miles over Portland's bridges. All routes took cyclists over the upper decks of the Fremont and Marquam bridges, as well as Tilikum Crossing.

After Sunday's event, the new car-free bridge will again close until its official grand opening on Sept. 12.

"They did such a nice job with the bridge," said Bridge Pedal participant Denise Dallmann. "The bike lane is really big, it's really scenic and has great views of the city."

In all, nearly 20,000 people participated in the Providence Bridge Pedal. More than 18,000 were on bikes, with another 1,700 walkers.

The event coincided with a public "preview" of the Tilikum Crossing. Throughout the day Sunday, TriMet said 40,000-50,000 people in all crossed the new bridge.
