Emilio Hoffman Memorial Soccer Tournament wraps up second year

Posted: Updated:

Young soccer players from around the Portland metro area gathered at Reynolds High School Saturday and Sunday for a tournament in memory of slain student Emilio Hoffman.

Emilio Hoffman was shot and killed by a fellow student in the locker room of Reynolds High School in June 2014. Police said the shooter, Jared Padgett, then turned the gun on himself.

Emilio Hoffman was an enthusiastic soccer player, and the this weekend's tournament was a way to honor him.

16 teams competed in the two-day tournament.

Emilio Hoffman's mother, Jennifer Hoffman, said she hopes the tournament can take place every year.

"So we hope to grow every year. The kids love it," Jennifer Hoffman said. "It's a good way for them to remember Emilio and be supportive and do what they love and what he loved to do."

Jennifer Hoffman also started a nonprofit organization called Emilio Inc., which aims to raise awareness of mental health issues.

"Our mission...we have three goals, and that is to spread awareness for mental health, we do random acts of kindness in the community, and get communities involved with one another."

This year's tournament included prizes such as tickets to Portland Timbers games and soccer balls autographed by Timbers players.
