Sunday night fire melts school playground equipment

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A fire destroyed playground equipment at Parklane Elementary School Sunday evening, upsetting for students and parents who saw the damage Monday.

A fiberglass climbing wall, netting and another climbing wall all melted to slag in the fire.

Firefighters said the fire started in bark chips and spread to the playground equipment. The official cause of the fire is undetermined.

Investigators could not rule the possibility that discarded smoking materials started it, though, nor could they rule out the possibility that it was started intentionally.

No matter the cause of the blaze, it is tough for students and their parents to see the damage.

PTO member Candace Behm said school families have worked hard and held numerous fundraisers to purchase much of the playground equipment for the school over the years.

“I was sickened because so much time and effort,” she explained. “I know it's a playground, in the big scheme of life it's a playground, but there's 400 something students here and, this is what they have.”

If anyone has any information on the fire, or wish to help the PTO, you can contact them on the school website or at 503-319-0856.
