Portland church sign pleads: "Please give back our lawn mowers and trimmer"

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A southwest Portland church is using its electronic reader board to ask for the return of some stolen equipment.

On its Facebook page the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church on Southwest Vermont Street said July 30 that its two red Honda lawn mowers and a new Stihl trimmer were stolen.

This week, the sign outside the church read:

To the people who stole our lawn mowers...Jesus forgives and so do we, but we need to mow...so please give back our lawn mowers and trimmer, no questions asked.

"To the people who stole our lawn mowers...Jesus forgives and so do we, but we need to mow...so please give back our lawn mowers and trimmer, no questions asked."

Police confirmed two red non-riding Honda mowers with black debris bags, one of which had Smart Drive speed control, were stolen from the church, along with an orange Stihl Trimmer FS-38 with the serial number 805 230 765 and manuals for the machines.

Church staff discovered the theft the morning of July 30 when they found someone had tampered with the lock.

Rev. Sean Wall, the priest in charge at st. Barnabas said the theft is disconcerting and wanted to send a message to the burglars that their crime has a big impact.

"I didn’t  really hope or believe that somebody would actually bring our mowers back but – gosh it would be great if they felt a little conviction in their own hearts and brought them back to us," he said. "This week I’m actually thinking about changing it to say if you won’t bring our mowers back, maybe you’ll just come mow every couple of weeks and you can keep them."

Others with the church said the loss is sure to be a financial hit to the church.

"We’re a church, we’re a faith based business. We don’t have the funds to replace it," Cathie Deinton Piacente, office administrator for the church, said. "However, more importantly, if they would just return it, that would be fine. No harm, no foul."

A parishioner has offered to donate some of his yard care equipment, so the church will likely take him up on it. However, they really would like the lawnmowers and trimmer returned.

Anyone who has information that can help track down the stolen items should contact Portland police.
