OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -

A boil water notice was issued for approximately 1,000 homes in the Oregon City area after a fire hydrant was opened early Tuesday morning.

Clackamas River Water said the unauthorized and unregulated flow from the opened hydrant in a gated community on South Kraeft Road caused a drop in pressure in the distribution system, resulting in a total loss of water in the homes of some customers.

The agency said a sudden drop in pressure can allow bacteria to enter the system. There has been no evidence of contamination, according to Clackamas River Water, however a boil water advisory was issued as a precaution while microbiological tests are conducted.

The advisory affects customers in Oregon City and the Redland Road area. Customers can enter their address at crwater.com to see if their home is in the advisory area.

Clackamas River Water said they anticipated being able to lift the advisory within 24 hours.

In the meantime, affected customers should bring water to a boil for one full minute and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation.

Boiled water is not needed for showering, doing laundry, hand washing or watering plants, along with general cleaning or mopping.

The agency said they have seen an increase in fire hydrant tampering lately. Tampering with the public water system, including fire hydrants, is a federal offense punishable by fines or imprisonment. Anyone who sees possible hydrant tampering in the Clackamas River Water service area is asked to call 503-723-2571, or 503-793-3407 after hours.
