Man arrested for fatal Gresham shooting appears in court

GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland man who turned himself in, in connection to a deadly shooting that happened over the weekend, was in court on Wednesday.

Police said Wallace Simpson, 29, turned himself in around 4:05 p.m on Tuesday. and was arrested without incident. 

Simpson was arraigned in court on charges of murder with a firearm, two counts assault in the first degree with a firearm and felon in possession of a firearm.

Police responded to the complex at Northeast 162nd Avenue and Halsey Street at 5:52 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators said Kevin Varnado, 27, of Portland, was found in the parking lot with a gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene.

On Monday, police also identified two other people who were injured by gunfire. Malcom Jesse, 21, and Collett Harris, 29, are recovering at the hospital from injuries described as non-life threatening.

Police said Jesse was located a short distance away from Varnado at the shooting scene. Harris was identified after she took herself to the hospital.

Detectives believe all three people knew each other, however no other details about what led to the shooting have been released.

On Monday, Simpson was identified as a person of interest in the shooting.

Simpson is being held without bail. His next court date is scheduled for September 8.
