PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A woman was sexually assaulted by a stranger outside her southwest Portland apartment complex and the suspect remains on the loose.

Officers responded to a Portland hospital at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on the report that a sexual assault victim was receiving medical treatment.

The 37-year-old woman told police she was walking from the parking lot to her apartment on the 7100 block of Southwest Oleson Road at 9:45 p.m. when a male suspect grabbed her, pulled her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

The woman told officers that she was able to use pepper spray on the man, which caused him to stop the attack and run away through the woods.

The woman drove herself to the hospital for treatment and was later released from the hospital.

Several officers, including a K-9 team, searched the area, but did not locate anyone matching the suspect's description.

The suspect is described as a white man, 30-50 years old, 5'10" with a muscular or "husky" build. He had short dark hair and was unshaven wearing a light-colored sweatshirt and shorts. The victim described the man as smelling of beer and cigarettes.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact Detective Jason Christensen at 503-823-0894, jchristensen@portlandoregon.gov.

Police said stranger-to-stranger sexual assaults are a rare occurrence.
