FOX 12’s most wanted breaks into Portland house; runs off with couple's gun

Posted: Updated:

A Portland woman says FOX 12’s most wanted broke into her house to hide from police and ended up running off with her husband’s gun.

This all happened at a home on North Sumner street Thursday night. The couple says they had no idea that man was in their home, and are really creeped out by it all.

Bryna Smith tells FOX 12 she and her husband were standing at the window of their home, making dinner, when they saw something going on in their backyard.

“My husband noticed a bunch of police officers and camera crew in our backyard, they were filming the show COPS," said Smith. "I was excited, because I used to love watching COPS.”

Not knowing much about who police were looking for, Smith says her husband decided to grab their gun.

“He thought, there’s a crazy guy in the neighborhood.  So, he got his gun out and we had it with us while we ate dinner and watched shows on TV,” said Smith.

Hours later, the couple says they decided to go to sleep. They brought the gun with them and set it on their bed along with a cell phone and computer, according to Smith.

“We went to bathroom to brush our teeth and wash our face, and when we came out, the gun, and everything else was gone, and the backdoor was wide open,” said Smith. “We think was probably hiding in an area of the room we don’t go to very often.”

Smith says she called 911 right away.

“We had to be evacuated from the house until the cops cleared it,” said Smith.

The couple thinks the man had to have been hiding there for quite some time without them knowing.  Which is a disturbing thought to smith, but, perhaps more troubling she says, is what could happen now that he’s armed and on the run.

“I want to find the guy and get the gun,” said Smith.  “We would feel terrible if someone was hurt with the gun we owned.”

Portland Police tell FOX 12 they were out filming with COPS photographers Thursday, and they were looking for someone who ran from officers that has yet to be found.

It’s unclear if that man is the same person who burglarized the Smith home.
