WASHINGTON COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

Washington County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a training facility near Timber Saturday afternoon. An instructor leading a group there had been injured and was taken via Life Flight to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.

The group of former military and law enforcement officers had rented a private training facility on the 72000 block of Northwest Cochran Road.

Upon arriving at the training center, deputies discovered the group was conducting firearms training using a substance know as Tannerite, which is explosive when struck by a bullet.

According to deputies, the training exercises included several scenarios where the trainees where shooting the Tannerite.

In one exercise, the explosive was placed behind a car door. When it was hit, shrapnel from the explosion struck the instructor.

Though investigating deputies consider this a training accident there is an on-going investigation to discover further details.
