PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Thousands gathered at Pioneer Courthouse Square Sunday for a free taste of Indian culture at India Festival 2015.

The India Cultural Association organizes the event every year to bring members of the area's Indian community together.

The festival featured live music, dancing, performances and food from local Indian restaurants.

Organizers say the event is all about preserving Indian culture.

"It's a time when you can really think about India and bring your heart back to home because usually we're so busy with our lives, we don't get the time to think about our true home. So I think this is a day to devote to our country," Manavi Thakur said.

"Since our parents are from India and we're technically from America, the generations kind of feel like Indian culture should be passed on down just so that we can have a little bit of both kids of cultures," Sanya Surya said.

The festival also celebrates India's Independence Day. India declared independence from the British Empire in August 1947.
