A two-alarm fire shut down Highway 212 and damaged several businesses in Damascus on Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to the 20200 block of Southeast Highway 212 at 5:07 p.m.

A spokesman with Clackamas Fire District #1 said a building had at least partially collapsed due to the fire, one business was destroyed and multiple others were damaged.

Investigators believe the fire started when a diesel truck pulled into the parking lot with exhaust issues. The intense heat from the truck may have caused the brush nearby to catch fire, and winds carried flames to the building, according to firefighters at the scene.

Crews tell FOX 12 the driver of the truck stayed on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

"A girl came in said there was a fire and that a truck backed into a bush, and the pipe started to catch it on fire," said Sparky's Pizza employee Meagan Horvath. "We were surprised, thinking that the smoke was in the distance, and we didn't realize how close it was. I was unsure of if we were supposed to stay inside and wait it out or not.  It was kind of scary."

"I moved my car, because I was scared," said Subway employee Katie Mealey.  "I went out back and my whole car was covered in ashes."

The Oregon Department of Transportation closed all lanes of Highway 212 about three miles east of the intersection with Highway 224 while crews battled the fire. A detour was put in place.

Crews say it took them about an hour in the extreme heat to knock out the fire.  Ultimately, they say a fire wall installed in the building is what protected the neighboring businesses.

Firefighters said no injuries were reported in connection to the fire.
