PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A worker at a metal polishing business in NE Portland sparked a fire while operating a circular saw.

Portland Fire & Rescue responded to the report of the fire around 11:55 a.m. on Wednesday at a business located in the 4400 block of NE 148th Ave.

PF&R said the worker was cutting on a dust collection hopper with a circular saw, which threw sparks that ignited nearby combustibles. Workers said a spark inside the hopper created a small dust explosion.

An employee tried to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived, which likely reduced the amount of fire damage.

PF&R said the fire was hidden in the roof structure and in a system of ventilation ducts that carries the dust from inside the shop to an outside collection system.

Everyone in the building were evacuated.

Crews were able to get the fire under control.

One firefighter sustained a minor eye injury from debris.
