Father-in-law of Longview mom who left baby in car says she was exhausted

Posted: Updated:

A Longview woman is facing charges of third degree criminal mistreatment after she left her one-year-old daughter in a hot car last week for 45 minutes.

The incident happened at the Fred Meyer in Longview on Tuesday evening. Police say the temperature in the car was 103 degrees.

Amanda Landis, 32, went to go get groceries. Officers said she left her baby in the car, and said she claimed she forgot her daughter was there.

Fortunately, someone saw the one-year-old and called for help. Police were trying to get the little girl out of the car when her mom showed up. Medics checked out the baby who was okay.

Landis’ reaction when she realized what she'd done could be heard on the video, as well as the reactions from other shoppers, including comments mocking Landis and saying she should be arrested.

Landis was arrested and spent a night in jail. She has no prior criminal history.

While some think she should be facing more serious charges, her father-in-law Dan Foister said she is a loving mother and just made a terrible mistake and was probably just exhausted from her graveyard shift as a nurse.

“They've been going like crazy, and she's been working a lot of hours,” he said. “And you know they had to move, so I know she is super busy and she works a lot of nights. And so I know she doesn't get as much sleep as she should.”

The baby girl is now staying with other family members. Landis is out on bail and will be arraigned next week.
