Firefighters battle wildfire on ODF land in Yamhill County

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters worked to control a fast-moving wildfire in Yamhill County on Wednesday.

The fire started nine miles north of Willamina on Oregon Department of Forestry land. Crews began responding to the scene with a helicopter at 4 p.m.

Several local fire departments also responded with firefighters on the ground.

Dry conditions in the area made it difficult for crews to get any kind of containment, according to an ODF spokesperson.

Air 12 showed flames continuing to spread in the heavily wooded area and thick smoke filling the sky into the evening hours Wednesday.

A Level 2 evacuation notice, meaning pack up and be ready to leave, was issued for East Creek Road north of Willamina at around 6:30 p.m. The evacuation order was then upgraded to Level 3, meaning go now, for four cabins in the area at around 7:30 p.m.

The smoke was visible for miles, but firefighters said the blaze was not threatening the cities of Willamina or Sheridan.

People who don't live in the area were advised to stay away to avoid creating congestion for emergency crews responding to the fire.

The cause is under investigation.
