Backfire from pickup starts 13 acre fire in Estacada

Posted: Updated:

A brush fire started by backfire from a pickup burned 13 acres and threatened homes in rural Estacada Wednesday evening.

According to a spokesman for the Estacada Rural Fire District, the pickup backfired twice while it was driving down the road, and the sparks started two separate spot fires, which were driven by the wind toward the tree line.

The fire was quickly upgraded to four alarms, with 32 units and 50 firefighters from the surrounding area responding.

“It got up into the trees in back and it was actually crowning and starting to run up into the canyon. And they got up behind it.  They got it stopped.  We were lucky the guys got here as quickly as they did,” said Pat Fields, who lives nearby.

By 7:00 pm, firefighters had the flames surrounded, and began mopping up hot spots.

No homes were damaged by the fire.
