Vancouver Police are on the scene of a shooting on the east side of the city.

The incident started near Southeast 1st Street and 164th Avenue near, where officers were responding to a reports of a suspicious man walking down the street carrying a gun in his waistband.

When officers approached the suspect, he took off running. After a brief chase, officers stopped him near 155th Avenue and Northeast 2nd Street.

Officers commanded the man to put down his weapon, but he refused. Moments later there were shots fired, according to police.

"They were quick popping sounds, like three or four  'pop, pop, pop,'" said witness Alex Garcia. "It seemed pretty bad with all the cops and stuff."

Officers called emergency response teams to the scene, but they were unable to save the suspect.

"It's scary, this is really nice neighborhood, I've lived her for nine years and nothing like this has ever happened," said witness Jeannie McCoy. "That could have happened in our yard, it was just right here, so its scary."

According to investigators, the man died of a self-inflicted wound. They are still in the process of determining if any officers discharged their weapons during the course of the situation.

At this hour, investigators tell FOX 12 they are also unsure of if the man is from the neighborhood, or what he was doing in the area armed with a gun.

The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to confirm the on-scene findings and will determine the identity of the man.
