'Sweet Cakes' bakers say sending cakes to LGBTQ groups was about 'love'

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Melissa and Aaron Klein, owners of the Sweet Cakes by Melissa bakery, are back in the headlines after sending customized cakes to various LGBTQ groups in Southern California.

The cakes were also sent with a copy of the movie “Audacity” from New Zealand evangelist Ray Comfort.

Speaking with Fox 12 Friday, Melissa said the act was not intended to be seen as a publicity stunt.

“So many people out there say that we are hateful and that this is about hate, and it’s not, it’s not about hate,” she said. “It’s not about not serving homosexuals, in fact we have served many homosexuals.”

The couple sent out ten cakes to various organizations with Comfort. They said they would love to send more, and may in the next few weeks send cakes to more LGBTQ groups.

The Kleins stated that their standing has often been misunderstood.

“Never once did I ever tell a homosexual person they could not get married,” Aaron said. “We simply said we did not want to be a part of it. There’s a huge difference there.”

The Kleins said they are in the waiting process for the appeal on the judgment against them for denying a homosexual Portland couple service. The couple face a $135,000 fine from the state.

In the meantime, Amy noted they were speaking to many groups on religious freedom, spending this weekend with the Ted Cruz presidential campaign in Iowa.

The Kleins said they had only had “mediocre” responses from their efforts in California, and Aaron said their larger goal was to start a conversation.

“We want to open up a dialogue between the Christians and the homosexual community and help them understand this is not about hate.”
