Governor Brown sends Oregon National Guard to help fight wildfires across region

Guardsmen with the Oregon National Guard arrived in Salem Friday afternoon, to train before helping fight fires that are burning out of control across the state. 

Governor Kate Brown activated troops because resources are running scarce throughout the state. 

According to the Oregon Military Department, the guardsman will assist with cleanup operations that will firefighters to rest, recuperate, and continue battling large fires throughout the state. 

The training will last four days with three 10-hour classes, and one day of field training. 

The Oregon Department of Forestry said it has been over 7 years since the Oregon National Guard had boots on the ground, helping fire crews. 

Normally, they help overhead with aerial firefighting. 

After training, the 125 guardsmen will be sent out Wednesday, to help battle the Cornet Windy Ridge Fire in Unity.
