High winds are bringing smoke from the Pacific Northwest Wildfires into the Portland Area

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Fire & Rescue has noticed an increase of calls into the 9-1-1 center Saturday after reporting ‘smoke in the area.’

The cause of the smoke is from the wildfires that are occurring throughout the Pacific Northwest Region.

Because of the large number and size of active fires, there has been a noticeable amount of smoke in the Portland area and Willamette Valley.

The increasing winds Saturday, traveling up to 26 miles per hour, is shifting the smoke to the area. This is likely to continue throughout the day.

The Pacific Northwest Wildfire Coordinating group has reported that wildfire operations have been active for a total of 67 consecutive days, with 43 currently active fires in Oregon and Washington.

This level of fire activity has not occurred since 2007.

Portland fire and rescue are reminding citizens to call 9-1-1 only when they see fire or smoke coming from a specific source.
