Hwy 26 shut down near Manning for second straight day due to wildfire

Posted: Updated: Aug 23, 2015 04:34 PM

Highway 26 was shut down west of Manning for the second straight day Sunday as crews worked to contain a wildfire.

Firefighters initially responded to the fire off the highway, near the Highway 47 interchange, at 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

By Saturday evening, the fire had grown to four acres and was burning in heavy timber on difficult terrain.

Dozens of firefighters, as well as a helicopter and a plane, were called out to battle the fire.

Highway 26 was closed Saturday so that the low-flying helicopter could do water drops in the area. After reopening one lane, the highway was again shut down in both directions to assist firefighting efforts at 1 p.m. Sunday.

There was no estimate from the Oregon Department of Transportation on when the road might reopen.

Drivers were advised to use Highway 47 and Timber Road as a detour.

Henry Hagg Lake was also closed Sunday to boaters and swimmers as water was taken from the lake by air to fight the fire.

One firefighter, who had just returned from working another wildfire burning in the state, was hospitalized due to possible heat exhaustion Saturday in connection to this fire. He was expected to be OK.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
