WILLAMINA, OR (KPTV) -

The Willamina Creek Fire in Yamhill County had grown to 230 acres on Sunday, but firefighters said containment had reached 20 percent.

Minimal winds Saturday helped firefighters make progress on containment. Nearly 30,000 feet of hose was installed in the fire area around the entire perimeter.

However, the fire continued to burn in heavy timber on land owned by the Bureau of Land Management and private industrial forestland owners.

The fire started Wednesday afternoon about nine miles north of Willamina. There are more than 250 people battling the fire. The cost estimate to date for the fire is $650,000, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry.

The fire area remained closed Sunday to public access. Roads nearby are very narrow with few turnouts. One road block is in place on Willamina Creek Road north of the junction with Coast Creek Road. Another road block is in place at the northern junction of Willamina Creek and East Creek Road near Peavine Road.

According to the Oregon Department of Forestry, the Willamina Creek Fire is producing minimal smoke compared to the large influx of smoke from the east side of the Cascades.

"The smoke from the large wildfires of the west serves as a vivid reminder of the intensity of this fire season. While the smoke is a nuisance and a health risk to residents here, it pales in comparison to the homes, livelihoods and lives lost to those immense wildfires. We remain aware of the harsh reality of this incredible fire season. Our thoughts are with those affected by fire here at home, and across the west," a Department of Forestry release states.
