NORTH PLAINS, OR (KPTV) -

A woman was critically injured and a horse was killed in a crash involving a pickup, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency crews were called out to Northwest Shadybrook Road and Pumpkin Ridge Road at 8:45 p.m. Saturday on a report that a truck had struck a horse and rider.

Deputies said the horse was pronounced dead at the scene. The rider, a 26-year-old woman from Portland, suffered injuries described as critical.

The driver of the pickup, 49-year-old Michael Brown, remained at the scene after the crash. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team was called out to determine the cause of the crash. Deputies said it is believed the driver may not have seen the horse.

The case is being referred to the district attorney's office to determine if criminal charges will be filed.
