Portland schools post signs telling dog owners to pick up after their pets

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Public Schools say they have a dog waste problem on school playgrounds because pet owners aren't picking up after their dogs.

The district says it's been an ongoing problem at schools around the city, with dozens of complaints about dog waste on playgrounds.

It's also a health issue, because students often step in the waste and then track it into classrooms, the district says.

That's why the district is posting signs informing dog owners that they are legally required to pick up after their dogs.

Those who don't pick up their dog's waste could face a fine of up to $150.

The school district hopes the signs will not only keep school yards cleaner and healthier but also remind pet owners that dogs are not allowed on school property during the school day.

During off-hours, dogs are allowed on school grounds but they must remain leashed.
